Whether you operate a fleet or drive a van, it’s essential your vehicle runs smoothly and efficiently. Van oil helps guarantee this, keeping the engine protected from unnecessary wear and corrosion so it can operate at peak performance and you can enjoy reduced maintenance costs.

What oil should I choose for my van?

In this guide to choosing van oil, learn how to find which oil you need, understand van oil grades, and learn about the impact of van oil on fuel economy.

Different vans require different oils, and with so many to choose from, it can be hard to know which oil to use in your vehicle.

Finding out is easy – just check your owner’s manual or input your make and model, or registration, into Total’s oil finder tool, Lub Advisor, to receive information on the lubricants and fluids your van needs.

But even if you know what oil your van requires, it’s a good idea to understand the differences between different oils and how they are graded. The main difference is oil type:

  • Mineral oils – Simple, crude-based lubricants used in older vans.

  • Synthetic oils – Purified, man-made oils that feature a range of additives with special properties designed to benefit modern and high-performance vans.

  • Semi-synthetic oils – Lubricants that include a mix of mineral and synthetic oils, plus a limited number of additives.

Van oil grades, such as 10W30, are used to note the viscosity of the oil. Here, the winter number (xW) shows oil viscosity at -17.7°C (0°F), with lower figures noting oils that thicken less when cold. Summer numbers (x/Wx) show the viscosity at 100°C – here, the greater the number, the more the oil is resistant to high-temperature thinning.

The engine oil you choose can have a significant impact on the fuel economy of your light commercial vehicle.

Look for the Fuel Economy (FE) badge on TOTAL QUARTZ products and you’ll discover a range of engine oils to significantly lower the fuel consumption of your fleet – reducing your carbon emissions with every mile driven and saving your fleet money at the petrol pump.

Age Resistance Technology – guarantees ultimate engine protection

Viscosity grade motor oil lubricant

For TOTAL QUARTZ engine oil, our engineers have formulated Age Resistance Technology, also known as ART. It's a breakthrough innovation: the interaction between oil molecules is increased, creating a super resistant molecular structure.

This helps to prevent the lubricant protective film from breaking, whatever the conditions: extreme temperature and pressure, friction and sludge accumulation. TOTAL QUARTZ with ART protects all your light commercial vehicle engine parts to ensure optimal working condition.
